Tricky one this. The facts are that Hesford was clearly a talented goalkeeper. A child star at Blackpool and a regular in the England Under-21s, a rosy future was painted for the African born netman. However a move to Sheffield Wednesday and the form of Martin Hodge saw his career stall and by the time he came to City, as a joint makeweight with Billy Whitehurst for the Tony Norman criminosale, he had failed to reach the heights he appeared destined for.
After a number of decent performances for City it all started to go wrong and as Hesford bulked up considerably and Fletchers' profit margins sky-rocketed, so he became synonymous with the early 90s decline of City under Ternent and Dolan. In the end he was offloaded to Maidstone where he scored a goal direct from a clearance. Until recently Iain continued to play in Hong Kong, most notably in recent televised games against England and Manchester United.
