After an FA Vase Final appearance for Brigg Town, Greaves was snapped up by Terry Dolan amid some controversy and became a solid yet unspectacular defender. It took him the Hateley era to shake off his Jeff Lee inspired torpor, and he blossomed as one of City's most confident stoppers and for a time one of the most capable defenders in the lower leagues, attracting considerable scouting attention.
Latterly he saw his form decline when asked to play in midfield rather than his favoured defence.  Ultimately Jan Molby offloaded him to Boston where a back four slot could be guaranteed.
