Tall striker brought in from Leeds for a little Pre-Xmas striking action, but failed to make any impression.  Also failed to make the Elland Road grade and moved to Chesterfield for first team experience.  After a patchy injury ravaged five season career at Saltergate, Folan began to hit goals in his mid 20s and earned a £500,000 move to Premiership Wigan Athletic.
Just under a year later, immediately after he had played against City in a Carling Cup tie, Folan's two goals in 10 starts for Wigan persuaded Paul Duffen and Phil Brown to part with a record fee of £1 million for his services.  Big price tag to live up to, that.  But he managed it well, despite a few niggling injuries, and his goals (plus partnership with Dean Windass and Fraizer Campbell) did much to propel City into the play-offs and the Premier League.  His impact was limited in the Premier League, although he did clinch the winner in our season opener against Fulham, and by September 2009 he was loaned to Championship side Middlesbrough amid some acrimonious words directed at boss Phil Brown.  Injured after one game his spell at the Riverside was short, he was rehabilitated by Iain Dowie on Brown's departure and scored a brace at Fratton Park on his return.
In 2010-11 City returned to the Championship, but Folan's form was variable and curtailed by injury at Barnsley.  In March 2011 he was snapped up by MLS side Colorado Rapids, for whom he scored a brace on his debut.
