Northern Irish international Fettis is a highly competent goalkeeper who was adept at all aspects of the netminder's art. His international caps helped him to Premiership contracts, although he never broke into regular first team football at the highest level. Also played a few games up front for the Tigers during the deeper injury crises, and contributed a couple of goals.  Was reunited with former City boss Terry Dolan at York for three seasons before the financial collapse of the club allowed Alan to terminate his contract and rejoin City on a free.
Fettis was in and out of the City team during the early part of 2003-04 and after an alleged ruck in the dressing room, he had loan spells at Sheffield United and Grimsby Town.  Joined Macclesfield Town in June 2004 on the day City signed Sergio Leite as replacement.
After a few years in the lower leagues Fettis was released by Bury in May 2007 and held goalkeeping coach posts at Derby County, Cheltenham Town and now, since July 2009, Sunderland.
