A composed young left sided defender, Mike emerged onto the scene at the tender age of 17 and immediately established a permanent place in the first team squad. His form flowered on Brian Little's arrival and he was a permanent first team fixture for three seasons.  While his defensive qualities were impossible to fault, his distribution was sometimes weak.  Consequently he found first team chances trickier to earn under the Jan Molby and Peter Taylor regimes.
In March 2003 he cut and ran south to Essex and joined Colchester on a short term deal.  That Summer he joined local rivals Grimsby Town.  After a season at the foot of Div 2 with the Mariners he moved to Notts County where he suffered serious injury before becoming a first team regular and carving his place in Magpies history for his long service through thick, thin and thinner (Sven Goran Eriksson).
