Signed from Doncaster Rovers for £25,000 in March 1996, Duane made a slow start to his City career before exploding with goals the following season. The goals kept coming, but so did the injuries. In the end, Duane took advantage of the Bosman ruling at the end of his contract to negotiate a lucrative move to Notts County. After a blank Meadow Lane season caused by injury Duane returned to Boothferry for a loan spell to improve his match fitness.  Subsequently, a big money move to ambitious Rushden and Diamonds was concluded amidst acrimonious words, where 24 Conference goals helped the Midlanders into the football league.
