When signed on a three month loan from Aston Villa, Carruthers filled City's goalscorer gap with a vengeance as he brimmed full of pace, skill and power in front of goal.  Has since toured the lower Leagues, scoring regularly along the way.  Was linked with a move back to Boothferry in 1998, a rumour that died with Mark Hateley's sacking.  Had his best season ever in front of goal in 2002-03 for Scunthorpe before cutting his losses and running to Macclesfield, leaving the damp-panted Brian Laws hanging on the telephone waiting for a call that never came confirming "Gandhi" would re-sign for the Glumford Park outfit.  Headed to Lincolnshire in 2004 after Brian Horton released him, spending six weeks at Boston before turning up at Lincoln.
