What a story!
Right from the off it was apparent that Ulsterman Roy was something special between the sticks. Equally adept at shot stopping, box commanding and distribution, Carroll was a golden nugget that was inevitably going to be cashed in by the skint Fish-led City. Talk of a million pounds haul was succeeded scandalously by a hurried £350,000 Wigan deal, days before a High Court appearance relating to unpaid Inland Revenue payments. The subsequent revelation that the evil Dolan, who was on the verge of the sack at the time of the deal, took a 15% cut of the fee made the whole episode even more galling for the City faithful.
Later, a valuable 20% sell-on clause was allegedly cashed in for a miserly £80,000 by the ludicrous Nick Buchanan, a perpetration of absolute theft given his subsequent £2 million move to Old Trafford.
Roy was a fringe player at Old Trafford - his most memorable moment came when he palmed a ball a yard over his goalline before scrambling it clear, the referee failing to award a goal - then fulfilled a similar role at West Ham.
As stories emerged that Roy liked a drink a bit more than was really good for a professional footballer, he had a brief spell at Glasgow Rangers before signing in January 2008 for Derby County. He had a brief resurgence as a first team player before being replaced by fellow ex-Tiger Stephen Bywater, such that in August 2009 he was released with two years left on his contract and headed to Denmark and Odense.
