Youth team midfielder that hovered on the fringes of the first team in 2008-09 then emerged the following season after a fine performance in City's pre-season China tournament and a debut goal against Southend United in the League Cup.  As the Tigers' second Premier League wore on, and relegation beckoned, Cairney  made his mark with a series of composed midfield displays, keeping the ball well and passing intelligently and without fear.  He even lshed in a twenty yard volley at Goodison Park.  As good a youth prospect as City have had for many years, Cairney returned to the Championship representing the future of the cash-strapped Tigers - but amid rumours of joining Jimmy Bullard's drinking coterie, Cairney was a peripheral figure for much of the season.  2011-12 was Tom's chance to put his career on track and he performed with skill and focus on the occasions he was given the nod - promising.
