A young goalkeeper snapped up on loan to alleviate a suspension and injury related netminding crisis. Bywater was signed by West Ham from Rochdale for a six figure fee as a sixteen year old, the highest fee paid for a goalie of such tender years in British history.  Bywater broke into the Hammers' first team during a spell in the second tier, but ultimately his chances of Premiership first team action were blocked by another ex-Tiger Roy Carroll and he moved on to Derby County after a brief loan.  After a fine season in the Championship and half a season in the Premiership, during which he was given ample opportunity to practice his technique for picking the ball out of the net, Stephen was withdrawn from the firing line and loaned to Ipswich.  Coincidentally, he was replaced once again at Derby by new signing Roy Carroll.
