Joining the proud list of City strikers born in towns that supply bottled mineral water, Burgess signed on 2003 transfer deadline day from Stockport, curtailing a loan spell with Oldham.  This 6 foot 4 striker therefore had a bit to prove as he stepped down to the Third Division and up to the grandeur of the KC Stadium.  He rose to the challenge elegantly, showing himself to be powerful, aerially dominant and skillful, if rather sluggish, asset to the first team.  His entry into the new-born KC hall of fame was assured when he netted a tasty hattrick in April 2003, and was formally adopted as a fans' favourite.  He recovered from two serious knee injuries that took a year and a half to heal and played an auxiliary role in the Tigers' assault on the Championship prior to his August deadline day transfer to Blackpool.
