Tony came to Boothferry Park with a wealth of defensive experience under his belt, and turned in some good performances, although these were often over-shadowed by the dour tactics of Terry Dolan's last season. Given his chance by Mark Hateley, Brien succumbed to persistent injury and quit the professional game at the age of 28. One of his last performance in black and amber was one of his finest, in the supercharged 1997-98 League Cup tie against Newcastle.
