Mark Hateley pulled his Glasgow Rangers strings to obtain on loan the services of this raw attacking midfielder.   Alas the departure of Walter Smith as 'Gers boss denied Steven the chance of a dream Boothferry Park permanent contract, and after half a season in the Ibrox reserves he was off-loaded to Dundee.  After one good season at Dens Park a change of management saw Boyack frozen out of the first team.  He moved to the West Coast to rebuild his Scottish career and within four months he returned to the Premier League with a bargain £25,000 move to Hearts.
After long spells of injury at Tynecastle and then Livingston he headed south to Boston United in February 2005, moving to Blackpool the following month.
