A early acquisition of the Mark Hateley era, Attila's contacts with then-manager of Sheffield United Nigel Spackman saw right sided striker Bettney come on an extended half season loan. Although exciting on the ball, Bettney's tricky skills often led him down blind alleys, and a large number of chances yielded only one goal.  A change of Bramall Lane management saw Bettney sign a new Blades contract at the end of 97-98 when a permanent switch to the Tigers was under consideration.  Subsequently he drifted around the Northern basement clubs to little effect and without ever scoring another senior goal, before ending up well down the non-League pyramid.
