An England international with 23 caps, Hull-born Barmby was a victim of the collapse of Leeds United as his career imploded in his late 20s.  Given a seven figure pay-out by Leeds to terminate his gargantuan contract, Barmby decided to give the "home-town hero returning home" routine a try.  He proved a stunning signing for City, piloting the Tigers to the Championship in his first season.  He was less influential in the Championship as he suffered a string of niggling injuries, but he remained a talisman for the club and an icon for the new breed of Tigers and - cometh the hour, cometh the man - he played a pivotal role in the Tigers play-off victory and subsequent ascent to the Premier League.
A bit part player in the top flight, Nicky nevertheless contributed occasional important goals and assists.  On City's return to the Championship Barmby was rewarded with a player coach role by Nigel Pearson, which he celebrated by notching his 100th senior club career goal at Doncaster in August 2010.
When Pearson left the Tigers late in 2011, the club turned to Barmby to pilot the club and after a successful period as caretaker manager, Barmby ended his playing career and took the role full time in early January 2012 after he received assurances that the club's exciting young assets would not be sold.  Barmby is Hull City's first Hull-born manager and his appointment places him in a pivotal role in determining the Tigers future.  Early signs are incredibly positive.
