An experienced midfielder with a good engine and sound passing skills, Ashbee slotted into Jan Molby's all-action style with aplomb when signed in 2002.  He continued to perform well under Peter Taylor with a definite "none-shall-pass" philosophy, although his aggressive instincts saw him rack up a number of bookings and sendings off.
Ashbee came to prominence as the 2003-04 promotion season drew to a climax, with a series of increasingly powerful and influential performances that culminated in Captain Fantastic netting the looping winner at Yeovil that secured City's first promotion in 19 years and elevated Ash to the City Legends roll call.  He continued to drive the Tigers forward in 2004-05 as club captain with his strong running, aggressive tackling and supreme organisational and motivational skills - his part in our second promotion in succession was rewarded by a contract extension.
Ash's influence in the Championship was lessened by a serious thigh injury that kept him out of the team for a year, then erratic performances against higher quality opposition.  But in 2007-08 Ashbee was again a pivotal force during the Tigers' improbable ascent of the Championship table that ended with promotion to the Premier League thanks to a Wembley play-off victory.  Ashbee's place amongst the all-time City greats is assured for ever more and he captained his Tigers side in all four divisions, a unique achievement in the modern game.  The fact that Ash continued to exert a strong influence on City's style and form in the strongest club league in the world was testament to the resilience and hard work he has invested in himself and in Hull City over the years.  Ash missed season 2009-10 in its entirety due to further injury and his return the following season in the Championship was greeted with an opening day goal at the KC.  But with his contract winding down, Ashbee was offered an 18 month deal by Phil Brown, now at Preston, and he moved on in January 2011 to help try and avoid relegation for the Lancastrians.  Within a year though Brown had moved on and Ash was released.  A rather sad end to a thrilling career.
Nonetheless - what a top, top man.
