970 Stephen Quinn

Biography

Mercurial midfielder Quinn signed for the Tigers on the August 2012 deadline day and immediately cemented his place in the City first XI after scoring on his debut.  That season ended in promotion to the Premier League where Quinn featured less prominently, although he was a key part of City’s run to the FA Cup Final and provided the cross that led to Curtis Davies’ lung-evacuating second goal inside the first ten minutes of the final.  By the end of a hard 2014/15 season that ended in relegation the spark had clearly been extinguished for Quinn, he refused a renewed contract and moved to Reading.

Quinn was born in Dublin and started out at St Patrick’s Athletic.  immediately after he made his first team debut for St Pat’s, Sheffield United swooped for his signature and within a few weeks he had made his debut for the Blades.  After two loan spells Quinn became a fixture in the Sheffield side for nearly five years prior to joining City on a bargain £250k deal.

Quinn began his time at Reading well but in his second season his place in the side was lost thanks to injuries and loss of form.  He remained a fringe player for the Royals as the 2017/18 season started and was released the following summer, signing a short term deal with Burton Albion that was soon extended to a two year contract. In January 2021 Quinn was loaned to Mansfield Town where he reunited with Nigel Clough, the manager who signed him at Burton two years previously. He signed a permanent deal with Mansfield in June 2021.

Quinn has been decorated at both under-21 and senior levels for Ireland, his senior debut came in June 2013, at the end of his first season at Hull City.
