961 Martyn Waghorn

Biography

Nuggety Mackem striker joined City in August 2011 on a three month loan.  After a promising start and a solitary goal against Doncaster Rovers his loan spell was cut short by a hamstring injury.

Born and raised in South Shields, Martyn Thomas Waghorn joined Sunderland’s youth system at 8 years old and made his way through the youth team ranks, making his first team debut for the Black Cats in a Boxing Day 2007 Premier League match against manchester United, a month before his 18th birthday.  He was unable to establish himself as a first team regular at the Stadium of Light and spent three month on loan at Championship side Charlton Athletic between November 2008 and January 2009, making 7 appearances and scoring his first career senior goal against Derby County in December 2008.

Waghorn had a successful loan spell at Leicester City for the entirety of the 2009/10 season, scoring 12 goals in 47 appearances and playing in the Championship play-of semi-final against Cardiff City, which the Foxes lost after a penlaty shoot out. Martyn finally left Sunderland in August 2010 having made just 8 senior appearances in three years for the Black Cats, and joined Leicester permanently for a £3m fee.  The 2020/11 season saw Waghorn deployed mostly as impact substitute for the Championship side before a hamstring injury in April 2011 halted his season early. He joined the Tigers on loan in September 2011 to regain fitness, but promptly suffered the same injury.

Martyn returned to first team action at Leicester in April 2012 and in the 2012/13 season he was again deployed primarily from the bench as Leicester again made the play-offs, though Waghorn was not involved as the Foxes lost to Watford at the semi-final stage. Leicester won the Championship title in the 2013/14 season but Waghorn was arrely involved, instead enjoying a four month loan spell at Championship rivals Millwall between September and December 2013 that yielded three goals in 14 appearances. In January 2014 Martyn’s time at Leicester City ended having added eight goals in 69 appearances on top of those made during his loan spell in the 2009/10 season.

In January 2014 Waghorn moved to Wigan Athletic, initially on a loan deal that was made permanenet in April 2014, and he contributed five goals that helped the Latics reach the Championship play-offs though Martyn again experienced semi-final disappointment as QPR defeated Wigan over two legs. Waghorn remained at Wigan for the 2014/15 season but reprised once more his impact substitute role and left the club in the 2015 close season having scored eight goals in 41 appearances.

In July 2015 Waghorn headed north of the border and signed for resurgent Scottish Championship side Glasgow Rangers.  His first season at Ibrox yielded 28 goals in 36 appearances including two hattricks in four days at the end of September 2015 against Morton in the League and Cowdenbeath in the Scottish FA Cup. His season ended early in February 2016 after another knee injury but he was restored for Rangers’ return to the Scottish Premier League in the 2016/17 season, scoring 16 goals in 41 appearances including a Scottish League Cup quarter final hattrick against Queen of the South in September 2016.

Waghorn’s 44 goals in 77 appearances for Rangers encouraged renewed interest from south of the border and in August 2017 he joined Championship side Ipswich Town.  Sixteen goals in 46 appearances for Ipswich during the 2017/18 season led to Championship rivals Derby County parting with £8 million to sign him in August 2018 and during three seasons at Pride Park Waghorn made 123 appearances and scored 30 goals, including important strikes at the end of the 2020/21 season that saw Derby narrowly avoid relegation to League One. His contract at Derby expired in June 2021 and the following month he joined Championship rivals Coventry City where made regular appearances during the 2021/22 season primarly as a substitute. Another half season sat on the Coventry bench took his Sky Blues tally to two goals in 42 appearances before he joined Championship rivals Huddersfield Town on a half season loan in January 2023, making his Terriers debut in a 1-1 draw at the MKM Stadium against Hull City. He went on to score once in 7 appearances for Huddersfield before his loan ended in May 2023.

In August 2023 Waghorn left Coventry and returned to League One side Derby County, signing a one year deal. His second spell at Pride Park started well as he netted a hattrick against Peterborough United at the end of August 2023.

Waghorn was capped twice at England under-19 level, making his debut in February 2009 against Spain and appearing again three months later against Bosnia. Between September 2011 and November 2012 Waghorn added five caps and two goals for England under-21s, scoring on his debut against Azerbaijan and netting again four days later against Israel.
