878 Billy Paynter

Biography

Striker Paynter joined City from Port Vale in November 2005, initially on loan and then permanently that January. His bustling style was pleasing on the eye and he scored a couple of fine goals, including a proper thraker at Crewe. However the signing of Jon Parkin squeezed Paynter down the pecking order and he moved on the Southend on the eve of the 2006/07 season.

Liverpool-born Paynter was a youth team player at Port Vale throughout his teenage years, debuting two months before his seventeenth birthday in May 2001. He had two seasons of impressive goalscoring and goal creating feats that led to his move to the Tigers.

Following his short spell at City Paynter embarked on a career that flitted between League One and the Championship. His single season at Southend was not a success and a move to Swindon saw his goal tally rise again. After netting 29 goals in 2009/10, Leeds United acquired his services but in two seasons he again failed to impress regularly. Subsequent moves to Carlisle, Doncaster and Hartlepool saw Paynter’s career ease down the divisions and he retired in the summer of 2017.
