72 Frederick Shaw

Biography

Outside left Fred Shaw signed for the Tigers in the summer of 1911 and for two seasons he was support player to the regular first team left winger, the England amateur international Gordon Wright. Shaw made his first three senior appearances in a frantic four day Easter period in April 1912 and scored his only City goal at Huddersfield Town in the last of this triumvirate. In the 1912/13 season he made five isolated appearances in September, November, December, February and March, never gaining a foothold in the first team. He left the Tigers in the 1913 close season.

Frederick Elliott Shaw was born in Byker, Newcastle Upon Tyne to a father who was a local butcher. Fred played junior football on Tyneside before signing for Hull City. He was a successful track sprinter as well as a footballer.

Fred moved to Southern League side Portsmouth in summer of 1913 and after one season at Fratton Park he moved to Southern League rivals Boscombe, the club that went on to later become AFC Bournemouth. Shaw’s playing days appeared to end when football was halted in 1915 due to World War One.

Later, Shaw survived the war and became a publican at Southsea on Hampshire coast. He died in October 1931 when just 40 years old.
