635 Gordon Owen

Biography

Winger Owen had a festive month on loan with Brian Horton’s Tigers in December 1987 and January 1988, making three appearances.

Born in Barnsley, Owen’s career began at Sheffield Wednesday in the late 1970s. He made nearly 50 appearances for the Owls as a young player but by 1983 he had fallen out of favour and joined to Cardiff City. He flourished in South Wales with 14 goals in his first season, which encouraged his hometown club Barnsley to acquire his services in 1984. Owen scored 25 goals in two seasons for the Tykes, but in 1986 he dropped down to the third tier and signed for Bristol City. His form continued but by the end of 1987 he was loaned to Hull City, then a month later he signed for Mansfield Town. Owen completed his playing career at Blackpool, retiring in 1991.

After his football career Owen returned to Barnsley, becoming an engineer for Yorkshire Water and managing a taxi company.
