581 Steve Richards

Biography

Powerful defender Richards was born in Dundee but raised in Snaith, in the badlands between Scunthorpe and Doncaster. He joined City Juniors at 17 and signed a professional contract a year later. He had two seasons as a teenage first team defender for City as they ailed in the Fourth Division, before leaving the Tigers in 1983.

He spent a year in the non-league wilderness before returning to the senior game in 1984 with York City, and went on to have a nine year career around the lower leagues, most notably four seasons at Scarborough, before a lengthy spell at non-league Guiseley. He then managed a number of Yorkshire non-league sides in the early 2000s – Gainsborough Trinity, Frickley Athletic, Goole, Ossett Town and Hall Road Rangers.
