1074 Norbert Balogh

Biography

Tall Hungarian striker Balogh signed for City in September 2019 after a short trial, and made his debut six weeks later in a rainy away win at Nottingham Forest. He was injured late in that game as City clung on for victory, and didn’t return to first team action until late February 2020 when he made a good impression coming off the bench. However the COVID-19 pandemic halted his emerging recovery and he left the club in late May 2020.

Born in Hajdúböszörmény, one of Hungary’s premier unpronouncable towns located to the east of the country, Norbert Sandor Balogh began his career at Debrecen, making his senior debut in August 2014 and scoring two goals in 15 appearances during the 2014/15 season. After adding a further five goals in 24 appearances at the start of the 2015/16 season Balogh attracted the interest of several European clubs, including Premier League sides. In January 2016 Italian side Palermo parted with 2.2 million euro for his signature. Over the subsequent three years he struggled for first team action with the Eagles, making only 26 appearances, and when the club went bust in May 2019 he became a free agent, following a spell on loan in Cypriot side APOEL Nicosia that yielded two goals from 12 appearances. Three months later it was Hull City that snapped him up as a free agent.

In August 2020 Balogh signed a two year deal with 2020 Hungarian Cup winners Budapest Honved and in his first season he scored 10 goals in 27 starts to re-establish his credentials as a capable forward. However in the 2021/22 season Balogh drifted out of the Honved first team afetr scoring twice in 15 appearances and in February 2022 he joined Slovakian side DAC Dunajska Streda on loan. He scored two goals in 12 appearances for Streda and in July 2022 he moved permanently to the Slovak side. He made 13 appearances for Streda at the start of the 2022/23 season but by the end of October 2022 he had drifted out of the first team picture. In February 2023 he was loaned to Hungarian side Vasas Budapest where he spent the remainder of the season and made 9 appearances. In July 2023 he joined Hungarian Nemzeti Bajnokság I side Kisvarda on a season-long loan, debuting against his first club Debrecen in August 2023.

Balogh was a Hungarian international at all levels from under-18 through to under-21. He made one appearance at Under-18 level against Austria in May 2014, then added six appearances at Under-19 level between July and November 2014, including three appearances in the 2014 Under-19 European Championship. He made one appearance at Under-20 level in March 2015 then rose to the Under-21s in September 2015 when he started against Leichtenstein. He won a total of 10 caps at Under-21 level, the last coming in March 2018 against Belgium.

In June 2017 Balogh earned two senior caps for Hungary in matches against Russia and Andorra. He was recalled to the international squad in March 2019, while playing club football for APOEL Nicosia, but did not make it onto the pitch.
