1069 Matt Ingram

Biography

Goalkeeper Matt Ingram joined City in June 2019 on a three year deal from Queens Park Rangers, deputising for George Long and making his debut impressively in the League Cup at Tranmere. He continued to be used as Cup goalkeeper and deputised for Long once during the club’s end of the season slump.

At the start of the 2020/21 season Ingram was preferred to Long as first choice goalkeeper and he contributed richly to City’s League One title winning season with calm control of his penalty area and agile shot stopping during key moments. He kept his first team berth for the return to the Championship in the 2021/22 season, holding off the challenge of Chelsea loan keeper Nathan Baxter until the winter months then returning to first team action in February 2022. He again dropped out of the first team in April 2022 and at the end of that month, after City had secured their Championship place for another season, he joined Championship rivals Luton Town on a short emergency loan that saw him make 4 first team appearances during the closing weeks of the regular season and the Hatters’ subsequent play-off campaign.

Ingram was restored to the City first team at the start of the 2022/23 season having signed a new three year contract and competed again with Chelsea loanee Nathan Baxter for the first team spot between the posts, winning the battle from November 2022 onwards.

Matthew Robert Ingram was born in High Wycombe and his career began at his local club. He came to prominence as a teenager, making his first team debut during loan spells and debuting for Wycombe at 20 before training with England representative sides. By January 2016 Ingram was recognised as the best ranked goalkeeper in League Two and had made 140 senior appearances for the Chairboys when he signed for Queens Park Rangers. While his first team chances were limited to only 19 senior appearances for the Rs, he continued to build his reputation with a loan spell at Northampton Town (20 appearances) and a brief temporary return to Wycombe (1 appearance).
