1042 Robbie McKenzie

Biography

Hull-born youth team product McKenzie made his City debut in a League Cup tie at Doncaster Rovers in August 2017.  A second League Cup appearance came at Sheffield United a year on, with his League debut at Rotherham coming a week later.

By October 2018 he was elevated to a first team starting berth due to squad injuries and performed well, retaining a supporting role across the defensive back line for the remainder of the season.  He also made occasional appearances during 2019/20 under Grant McCann’s leadership, including an impressive FA Cup performance against Chelsea, but was not featured as City tumbled out of the Championship in June and July 2020. McKenzie left the club at the end of the 2019/20 season.

In August 2020 Robbie signed for City’s League One rivals Gillingham, he made 84 senior appearances and scored five goals in two seasons at the Priestfield Stadium, scoring his debut senior goal in December 2020 against Rochdale. In May 2022 McKenzie refused a new contract with the Gills but failed to find another club and re-signed for Gillingham at the end of August 2022, helping the Gills’ new owners to ease clear of relegation to the Conference National league after a poor first half of the 2022/23 season. he remained an important part of the Gills’ first team in the 2023/24 season as the new look squad launched a faltering promotion campaign.
